Book Review: For One More Day by Mitch Albom
From the author of Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven comes another bestselling book that has captured the hearts and minds of audiences all over the world. For One More Day tells the real life story of Charles “Chick” Benetto, a pro-baseball player who decides to end his life after a series of depressive events, only to come face to face with his long-dead mother. The book starts off with his suicide attempts and later moves on to him spending one insightful and love-filled day in the company of his mom. Without going into spoilers, the story revolves around Chick Benetto’s life, how he lived it and how he would have wanted to live it. It talks of his sorrows, regrets, and the things he wished he could change. At the end of the story, a beautiful conclusion to the tale wraps up another excellent novel from Albom.
What makes this story touch so many of those who read it is its realism. The emotions and experiences Chick goes through are things that could happen to any single person out there. Similarly, his reactions to these events are also what some people would end up doing. The best part of the story is that it talks of something which is boundless, pure and eternal: that of a mother’s love. It exemplifies love at its best form, and shows how even amidst all odds, love can prevail.
For One More Day is certainly one of those novels that strike people where it matters most: the heart. It is definitely a must-read.
